CEBU CITY, Philippines – Following the occurrence of another accident at a construction site, the Office of the Building Official (OBO) here has decided to closely monitor all ongoing construction activities in the city.
Engr. Josefa Ylanan, the OBO chief, said the OBO would conduct random checks on the different construction sites in Cebu City to determine if safety measures were in place.
Ylanan issued the statement after an accident occurred at the Aegis People Support expansion building in Asiatown IT Park in Barangay (village) Lahug, Cebu City Saturday evening, injuring one construction worker working for the DCD Construction Inc.
It was the second accident for the month. The first was last April 7, at the Gaisano Capital Building in Barangay Tisa, also in Cebu City, killing five construction workers.
Ylanan said they have set a meeting with contractors to discuss their compliance with the safety measures.
“I will call the attention of all the contractors. I will call the Cebu Contractors Association to remind them of their responsibilities. They should not be careless,” she said.
Ylanan also said that Section 308 of the National Building Code requires a project engineer should be present to oversee construction works.
Ylanan said she would visit the Aegis People Support construction site to talk with representatives of the DCD Construction Inc.
The OBO would check if a project engineer was present when the accident occurred and if the construction firm undertook measures to ensure their workers’ safety, she added.
The OBO had suspended the construction activities at the expansion building of Aegis People Support, a call center company, pending the result of the administrative investigation.
